Class of 2010 Update
|
|
The
Class of 2010 is in full swing and with visits to Southern
Virginia in May and the Shenandoah Valley in June.
Southern Virginia Session
In
Southern Virginia the class received a behind the scenes tour of
the science labs at the Virginia Museum of Natural History in
Martinsville, got a chance to see the dairy cows up close
and personal and hear from Roy VanDerHyde on the VanDerHyde Dairy Farm and
while on the farm also heard from Robert Mills, a local poultry
farmer. VanDerHyde Dairy currently has a manure digester under
construction on the farm. Roy explained how waste would be processed
into electricity at the site in 21 day cycles. The Class also
toured the Spencer-Penn Centre, an example of adaptive re-use
of historic property. While at the Spencer-Penn Centre they
heard from three local residents who lost their jobs due to factory
closings and had to make the decision to switch careers. A big
highlight of the session was the visit to the Martinsville Speedway
on Friday night. The class heard from Clay Campbell, President
of the Martinsville Speedway and also Rod Short from VIRginia
International Raceway. After hearing about the history and the
economic impact of the two raceways the class members rode in pace
cars around the track, followed by a reception and dinner in the pit
stalls. On Saturday morning an education panel included Dr.
Leanna Blevins from the New College Institute, Tony Jackson,
Superintendent of Henry County Public Schools and Dr. Scott Kizner,
Superintendent of Martinsville City Public Schools. To end the
weekend, the class came together to brainstorm how they would brand
the Southern Virginia region and create a path forward. The
class members enjoyed this time to put their heads together and come
up with some potential solutions.
Co-chairs
for the Southern Virginia session were Tim Hall, Deputy County
Administrator, Henry County and LEAD
VIRGINIA Class of 2009 and Kathy Rogers, Executive
Director, Piedmont Arts Association and LEAD VIRGINIA Class of 2005.
Sponsors for the session included Appalachian Power and the
Martinsville Henry County Economic Development Corporation and
in-kind
support from the Spencer-Penn Centre.

Shenandoah Valley Session
In
June the class visited the Shenandoah Valley region and for the first
time attended a performance of the American Shakespeare Center at the
Blackfriar's playhouse, following a regional overview from Robin
Sullenberger from the Shenandoah Valley Partnership. On Friday,
they toured Dynamic Aviation. The class also had the
opportunity to tour the brand new Rockingham Memorial Hospital which
was only four days away from their grand opening and the transfer of
all of their patients. It was a unique opportunity to see the
hospital with no patients and empty halls! They were also
toured the brand new, not yet open to the public performing arts
center at James Madison University. While at the center,
the class heard about education in the region, both higher education
and K-12. Following a full day the class finished
with dinner in a Mennonite home. Saturday ended the Valley
session and included a case study on the region's landing of a
significant economic development prospect, SRI (Stanford Research
Institute). During the case study, class members served as
members of the Board of Supervisors from Rockingham County, Board of
Visitors from the local colleges and universities, the General
Assembly and the city council members from the City of Harrisonburg.
The case study highlighted the impact of regional collaboration as a
strength in landing this prospect.
Co-chairs
for the Shenandoah Valley session were Dr. John Downey, President,
Blue Ridge Community College and LEAD
VIRGINIA Class of 2006 and Dr. Karen Wigginton, Vice
President of College Relations, Bridgewater College; with special
assistance from Olivia Shifflet, Assistant to the Vice President of
College Relations, Bridgewater College. Sponsors for the
session included the Harrisonburg Economic Development Office and the
Rockingham County Community Development Office. In-kind
contributors were Blue Ridge Community College and Bridgewater
College.

LEAD VIRGINIA To Launch
Scholarship Endowment Campaign
|
|
LEAD
VIRGINIA's
board of directors has approved a campaign effort to raise funds for
an endowment to fund scholarship participation in the LEAD VIRGINIA class
program, aimed at building diversity and expanding geographic
representation in the statewide leadership initiative. Each
year 20%-30% of the class requires scholarship assistance. An
endowment fund will help to sustain this scholarship need on a continuing
basis.
To launch the fundraising effort, alumni representing each class year
will form a campaign committee, to be chaired by inaugural board
chairman for LEAD
VIRGINIA, Sandy Fitz-Hugh. The campaign committee
includes:

goal is to raise $200,000 payable over a 3-year period toward
scholarships and eventually, support for alumni programs as well.
Each alumnus will be asked to make a pledge of support to the
campaign. As funds are raised, an Endowment Committee will
eventually be established to decide on investment strategy and
