Class members toured the USS Truman aircraft carrier at Norfolk Naval Station

 

In Hampton Roads:

The class of 2009 visited the Hampton Roads region of Virginia October 15-17. During their session, they met regional leaders and visited local landmarks that are vital to Hampton Roads. They visited the Casemate Museum and the Chamberlain Hotel at Ft. Monroe, the Virginia Port Authority, Virginia Beach Convention Center Modeling Simulation Conference, Norfolk Naval Station, the Chrysler Museum, a River and Port Cruise onboard the Carrie B, and participated in a model General Assembly at Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hilton Hotel. The group heard from John Quarstein, Historian; Dana Dickens, Hampton Roads Partnership; Jeff Keever, Virginia Port Authority, LEAD VIRGINIA Board of Directorsand Class of '05; Jeff Heller, Norfolk Southern Corporation; Stephen Porter, Sentara Princess Anne health campus; Michael Kerner, Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System, LEAD VIRGINIA '06; Dr. Cynthia Keppel, Hampton University, Proton Therapy Institute; Madeline Dunstan, Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology; Dr. Michael Summers, Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach Campus, and Jim Ricketts, Virginia Beach Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

 

The Curriculum Co-chairs were Angela Blackwell, Vice President of Leadership Programs, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, LEAD VIRGINIA '07, Dana Dickens, President & CEO, Hampton Roads Partnership, and Jeff Keever, Deputy Executive Director, Virginia Port Authority, LEAD VIRGINIA '05 and Board of Directors. LEAD VIRGINIA thanks them for organizing another successful visit to Hampton Roads.

 

LEAD VIRGINIA would like to extend a special thanks to Captain Casey CollinsLEAD VIRGINIA '06, for his generous involvement during the Hampton Roads session. His assitance with the class's visits to Ft. Monroe and Norfolk Naval Station is greatly appreciated.

Save-the-Date: November 20 

 

Save the date, Friday, November 20. Make note of these two important events:

 

  • As the Class of 2009's expedition of economic development, education and healthcare through Virginia's rich regions closes, we will celebrate the completion of the participants' experience with a graduation ceremony. On Friday, November 20, the graduation reception will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be followed by dinner and program. Please join us at The Jefferson Hotel on West Franklin Street in Richmond in congratulating the Class of 2009.

Class graduation speaker will be Liz Povar, '09 and Director of Business Development for Virginia Economic Development Partnership.

Invitations have been mailed. Please R.S.V.P. by November 13th.

  • Also on Friday, November 20, alumni are invited to join the class for an afternoon panel on healthcare. The speakers include: Dr. William Hazel, Jr., member of the Board of Trustees, American Medical Association; Andrew Webber, President & CEO, National Business Coalition on Health; Bill Kallio, State Director, AARP and Peter Marmerstein, CEO, HCA CJW Hospital.

R.S.V.P. cards to this event have been mailed with the graduation invitations.

 LEAD VIRGINIA alumni are invited to The Atlantic Monthly Panel sponsored by Altria featuring panel discussion by leading experts on innovations in education.

 

The series is free and open to the public. All events will be from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Richmond Convention Center in the Ballroom Pavilion. If you would like to attend, please go here.

LEAD VIRGINIA alumni are invited to attend The Common Good, The Jepson Leadership Forum 2009-10 Season sponsored by the Jepson School of Leadership Studies on Monday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Modlin Center for the Arts.

 

> Dead Aid: The Moral Imperative to Find a Better Way in Africa

Dambisa Moyo, an innovative Economist who was named one of Time's most influential people in the world in 2009, will be speaking about development-related aid transferred from rich countries to Africa. Moyo argues that foreign aid should be phased out and replaced with new ways to finance development including trade with China, accessing the capital markets, and microfinance.

Come join your fellow LEAD VIRGINIA Southern Virginia Alumni for a holiday social on Saturday, December 12, 2009. The get-together will take place at The Prizery in South Boston, VA. The cocktail reception begins at 6:00 p.m. and will be followed by a Jazz musical concert at 7:30 p.m. Concert tickets are $24 per person. The reception will continue after the concert at the home of Wanda Jeffress, LEAD VIRGINIA '08, and Stanley Jeffress.

Alumni Buzz

Chris Bailey LEAD VIRGINIA '08 and Daniel Barchi LEAD VIRGINIA '06 have been named by Governor Tim Kaine to serve on the Governor's Health Information Technology Advisory Commission.

 

Bob Dendy LEAD VIRGINIA '09 and President and CEO of Presbyterian Homes and Family Services was recently appointed by Governor Tim Kaine to serve on the Virginia Board for the Blind and Vision Impaired.

 

Joe Hines LEAD VIRGINIA '08 was the speaker at the Fuqua School 2009 Honors Ceremony in Farmville, VA. He spoke of the value of community, hard work & perseverance, pursuing your education and giving back to society.  Over 30 students were inducted into various Honor Societies.

 

Sean O'Brien LEAD VIRGINIA '05 and Executive Director at the Center for the Constitution at James Madison's Monpelier has been appointed by Governor Tim Kaine to serve on the Commission on Civics Education.
